HELLO, DETROIT! If you haven't yet seen the news, we've got Motor City not only in our rearview mirror, but, as of Monday, we've also got it plugged into our GPS as our next stop! Maybe that's why when we contemplated what album to serve up to you at a nice price this week, it wasn't difficult to land on the one, the only, The Gories. This trio was born out of the cultural vacuum that was Detroit in 1986. Rooted in the primal, primitive underpinnings of 50's rhythm and blues and unhinged 60s garage punk, the sound they came to was wholly their own, and The Shaw Tapes: Live in Detroit 5/27/88 which was recorded at a house party in a converted store front), is the live recording that best captures the band's heavy, scuzzy, inimitable sound at the height of its powers. Beyond this live record, we also recently released the first new recorded material from the Gories in over 20 years in the form of the 7" single "Be Nice" b/w "On The Run." Might as well pick that up while you're at it, because if you don't know the Gories, you don't know Detroit, and if you don't know Detroit, you can't begin to fully understand Third Man Records. It's as simple as that.
