Last night, Light + Sound Machine, co-presented by Third Man Records and the Belcourt Theatre, screened Uganda's 1st action movie, Who Killed Captain Alex?, and the experience was a delight for all involved... even if they didn't make it out alive.

Director Nabwana I.G.G. and the cast made this wonderful introduction video specially for us to screen before the film began...

When the film was over, we had a Light + Sound Machine first: we became part of the action! We shot footage of our screening audience getting blown up to send back to Uganda for Nabwana to use in a future Wakaliwood production! We also had a live skype with Nabwana and his family, which was a true treat.

THANK YOU TO YOU, NABWANA, AND TO YOUR WAKALIWOOD FAMILY!

So, on the heels of such a fantastic night, it seems like a fantastic time to announce next month's Light + Sound Machine selection... A night dedicated to Stan Brakhage!

BRAKHAGE

1955-1999 / sound & silent / 16mm / 88min trt

Thursday July 23rd / Doors 7pm, Show 8pm at Third Man Records

In the realm of experimental film, there is no name more iconic than Brakhage. During the second half of the 20th century, the visual kinetics of Stan Brakhage's work came to represent the household understanding of avant garde cinema. And yet, though he's often imitated, his films remain wholly unrivaled in their ability to anchor formal abstraction with personal biography and philosophical lyricism. This program, originally assembled in 2014 by Marilyn Brakhage and noted film preservationist Mark Toscano for the National Gallery of Art, spans 45 years of Brakhage's filmic exploration. Combining canonized work with overlooked gems, and covering an array of his techniques in sound and silent filmmaking, this event promises revelations for both newcomers and longtime admirers of Stan Brakhage.
